anim'est (2): video load and some cool songs
hah, last night managed to be unexpected. i knew i was going to see two bunches of ads&videos, but i had somewhat neglected to think it through: what does video imply? music, of course. also the music has a chance to be good-weird, since the artists chose such quirky visuals to pair their music with. so yeah, good news: i have yet to process stuff, but i might have discovered some singers/bands.
also, with apologies to the ad industry, ads continue to do close to nothing for me.
other things worthy of mention:
- the unanimous idea for conveying 'creepy' seems to be LOTS OF TEETH. hmmm. also, animals. in the dark woods if possible. animals with teeth.
- what i thought was the creepiest video was one in which a kid gets eaten by insects. mmm maybe that's just me.
- come to think of it, this was not 'creepy animation night'! creepy was not a necessary reoccurence. i guess it just enters the dark sphere of...unusual...interesting?...apocalyptic?...arty. it wasn't super extreme anyway.
i just selected my favourites, in the order i saw them in:
1. 'white noise' - murder by death
i forgot to mention a reoccurring marine scenery. yes water is frightening, and beautiful.
2. 'circus love' - elif caglar
(gah! i just remembered to say: what i'm giving are song title+artist name. the creators of the animation are mentioned under each if you go on youtube.)
this one is happy-sad and contains a lot of sweets, so me&giulia were very impressed.
3. 'dogwoods' - phil woolf
it's mostly the music that i loved here. animal in the woods = every animation this year. atmosphere= eerie/good. goes with the music.
4. 'cecelia and her selfhood' - villagers
this is more of a narrative than i would've expected, and falls pretty squarely under the category of haunting. what can i say, i guess some bands just do this well. bonus animals in the woods.
i was not blown away, but i have to morosely admit this is good.
5. 'pirate's life' - we cut corners
oooo breath of fresh air. also, looks pretty familiar (am i very dumb to have thought of "myriad harbor"?? i didn't go rewatch that.)
6. 'have you seen my sister evelyn' - evelyn evelyn
i do not want to start counting the ways in which i admire and am exasperated by amanda palmer. this is what would happen if i went on about this clip...and it's not fair. the animation is the appropriate amount of playful, and drawing on a window offers such a good frame for it. a provisory joyfulness, with a darker something behind. so i guess i loved the meta aspect of this video more than any of the other parts that went into it.
7. 'free to be me' - haroula rose
earnest, hopeful. melodic. cute. the animation is funny, and it's slovakian. i knew the song!!!! no idea where from.
8. 'parler le fracas' - le peuple de l'herbe
ummmm....my favourite? (warning: the still from the video tells you there will be blood, yes?) i like thinking that nowadays it's impossible to have a festival without something like this cropping up. also, rapping in french will never fail to impress me, ever.
alright, that's it for now. enjoy!
