on the road

these are just a few shots with a dubious ethnic slant that i took on the road recently.

1. in bucharest last week i met my friend matt at the station, while waiting for my night train. i was half-dead from the plane and carrying about 50 kilos of luggage, so we just caught up at the bar/terrasse inside the station, surrounded by population in transit. matt is so visibly american that this funny thing happens all the time (i had missed it!): in about 3 minutes, all the beggars and hangers on in the area come to chat with him/us, ask for cigarettes or money or whatever. this is a Roma woman who insisted to have a photo with matt:

2. on the way from the village to town, with my parents, passing through other villages and their peripheries...i was planning to document a trend i´d noticed in local Roma/gypsy houses, of hanging framed paintings on the outside of the house. but it´s hard to take photos from a moving car.

and i mean i also feel bad to stop and ask permission, though i should work on it. it just feels condescending either way...i guess because it is?

3. moving on, further along we met a caravan. this time i absolutely wanted photos, and i asked my mom to stop, so the car was swarmed very quickly by people of all ages yelling and begging for money. in about 5 seconds we were out of there. this is why i´ll never do reporting.

4. and it´s stork season:

5. yesterday i was in cluj, my former home, on a day trip (epic!) and tomorrow i´m going again. the stated purpose is paperworkery, but of course i´m excited to meet my close friends, take in some movies at Transilvania Film Festival (yes, it´s called TIFF) and come to terms with what´s changed.
soon!
